Officers arrested a 22-year-old Brazilian man on suspicion of assaulting the alleged burglar.
Detectives are trying to piece together exactly what happened during the incident at 1pm in Bournemouth, Dorset, yesterday.
A Dorset Police spokesman said: 'Police were called to Derby Road in Bournemouth with a report of an assault.
'On arrival officers found a 56-year-old Bournemouth man lying in the road with serious head injuries.
'The man was taken by ambulance to Poole Hospital and later that day transferred to Southampton Hospital's neurological intensive care unit.
He confirmed detectives were investigating reports that the injured man may have been responsible for a burglary that had occurred before the assault.
The 22-year-old man today remains in custody.
UK Lockdown point of view
In this case it appears that the victim is only suspected of burglary so it would be wrong to make any comment on this specific case at this time, however it must be pointed out that if burglars and other criminals were dealt with in this way regularly we would have a much safer society for decent citizens and a much less safe society for criminals, it is duty of all decent citizens to ensure that our towns and cities are no longer safe-havens for criminals.
